Tonight, December 10, 2024, Jon Moscone (Noe St.) was elected the 2025 DTNA President and three new Directors were elected: Nathanial Edwards (Steiner St.), Leah Culver (Walter St.), and Pavan Yedavalli (Noe St.). Also joining the 2025 Board: Bob Bush (Vice President – Beaver St.), David Troup (Secretary – 15th St.), Paige Rausser Grey (Treasurer – Beaver St.), Erik Honda (Editor – 15th St.), Kimyn Braithwaite (Director – Sanchez St.), Dennis Richards (Director – Beaver St.), Eric Munsing (Director – 16th St.)

The Bylaws Revision supported by the Board passed (Vote 25 to 0). Going forward Amendment voting will be by all members online or by paper ballot rather than those in-person at a meeting. There will be due notice and discussion of amendments at a Public Meeting, and the vote will be taken at the next public meeting.

Frank Tizedes’ Voting Amendment failed (Vote 1 to 24) after a spirited discussion supporting DTNA being inclusive of all voices in our diverse neighborhood.

At the December 10, 2024, Public Meeting, Jeffrey Dumlao introduced his new floral boutique, Chartreuse by Roje, on Church Street. He is looking to have a Holiday function on Sunday, December 22, 2024, featuring local artists and craftsmen. Supervisor Rafael Mandelman gave an update of City Affairs. Dennis Richards updated the Housing Element status. And Nathanial Edwards reminded us that the next Wiggle Fest will be in April.

Sunday, December 15, 2024, Craft Fair, Harvey Milk Recreation Center for the Arts, 11:00AM to 4:00PM. (50 Scott Street adjacent Duboce Park)

Friday, December 20, 2024, Castro Night Market, 5:00PM to 10:00PM, at 18th and Castro, sponsored by Castro Merchants. Civic Joy Fund and CG Events.

DTNA Boards, 2024 and 2025, wish all an enjoyable Holiday Season and a healthy successful New Year, and thank members who  have left the  Board and Triangle Neighbors and Businesses for their contributions in making a successful 2024.

By Erik Honda, DTNA News Editor, Henry Street neighbor

Neighbors, DTNA needs you. Last year as we switched to a new membership system on our website many of you renewed your DTNA membership as the year came to a close (thank you!) and are due for renewal soon. At our November Board meeting we learned that due to an unrelated delay in invoicing for newsletter advertisements and the concentration of memberships at the end of the year we have just enough cash on hand to pay for one issue of the News. If you value the work that this organization does, including the information this newsletter provides, please begin or renew your membership today:

Our regular membership is only $35 a year, but we happily take donations up to the superstar level of $250. And we want to include everybody. If $35 is too much for your family to afford at this time, we offer a discounted membership, just email us at membership@dtna.org

DTNA also needs you to be involved, at every level. We want you to vote in our Board elections – one will conclude soon at our December 10 General Meeting. We want you to consider joining the Board yourself – we welcome board members who represent and embody the rich diversity of our neighborhood, and women, young people, people of color, renters, and business owners would help achieve that representation. If you are a member who has an interest in joining the Board, or want to learn more about how the Board and DTNA function, please contact DTNA at info@dtna.org or by using the website contact form on our website www.dtna.org.

Lastly, we need your votes. At the December meeting we will also be voting on two revisions to our bylaws. The first is mainly bureaucratic – allowing for an electronic vote of all members instead of just members who attend the meeting when a vote is taken, limiting the immediate past president’s Board seat to a one year term, and insureoing the Board’s inclusion in selecting DTNA managers and project leads. The DTNA Board recommends a YES vote in favor of these revisions.

The second, promulgated by outgoing president Frank Tizedes, reads as follows: “Voting on topics involving the Duboce Triangle neighborhood, brought to the community by DTNA or by any other organization, are open to all Duboce Triangle neighbors and business owners to participate.”

The sentiment to seek out and consider diverse views in making decisions is consistent with DTNA’s practices and beliefs for decades. DTNA has never asked about membership status when soliciting input from neighbors at meetings and elsewhere, and will not do so in the future. But despite its laudable intent, the DTNA Board believes that Frank’s proposed amendment does not belong in the bylaws. In our view it is poorly written and vague, and could be interpreted in ways which could be detrimental to the organization and the neighborhood. And the bylaws are a legal document – not a place for statements of values, which should be memorialized elsewhere.

In our view the amendment is a solution in search of a problem: DTNA has never limited input to only members, and has avoided taking any position on issues where consensus in the neighborhood did not exist, focusing instead on educating the neighborhood about the issue, something we will continue to do. Frank’s amendment would not change DTNA’s practices in any way, but it could well create opportunities to harm the organization. The DTNA Board recommends that you vote NO on this amendment. The current Bylaws, last revised in 2023, and the proposed revisions can be viewed online at www.dtna.org.

So please come to our December meeting, meet your neighbors and enjoy some social time, make a vote on the bylaws, sign up to volunteer for a committee or ask about being a Board member. See you there - DTNA needs you.

Please join our Alamo Square neighbors in standing up against hate. Currently the neighbors of Alamo Square are rallying in supporting the Williams family, who were subjected to horrific anti-Black hate crimes and a devastating fire. United Against Hate Week, which runs from September 21-27, 2024, allows communities nationwide to unite against hate and promote inclusion, equity, and justice. By standing together as neighborhoods, we can create a safe and inclusive environment for all.

Every action counts. Together, we can turn this moment into a powerful movement against hate. For information on how to get involved, please visit the UAHW website and sign up today. Together, we can make a difference and show that hate has no place in our community.

    Get Involved:

    ·       Visit unitedagainsthateweek.org and participate in UAHW events from September 21-27, 2024.

    ·       Host or attend community discussions and screenings.

    ·       Display UAHW posters and spread the word through social media.

    ·       Join fundraising efforts to support victims of hate crimes.

We can unite against hate and build a stronger, more inclusive community.

It is with a heavy heart that DTNA extends its condolences to the family of Jake (Yacoub) Shatara, the proprietor of Noe Valley Market at 15th and Noe. Jake passed away last week. To remember him in happier times, the "Neighborhood Gem" article that featured Jake in the August September 2018 issue of the Duboce Triangle News is posted here.

Neighborhood Gem - Jake’s Noe Valley Market

Some neighborhood businesses are an anchor, so much part of the fabric of the community, that it seems like they must have always been there. Noe Valley Market at the corner of 15th Street and Noe Street has not actually been around forever, but it comes close. Jake Shatara has owned the market since 1974, but the market was already called Noe Valley Market when he moved to the neighborhood in 1968. Jake’s family and other Palestinian Christians were able to come to America as the result of the 1965 Immigration Reform Act, which allowed for family reunification – Jake’s uncle and two of his sisters had already left Ramallah and were awaiting him when he arrived. They first lived in an apartment at Noe Street and Henry Street, above what is now Amasia Sushi, but was then an ice-cream parlor.

Jake’s father, Jalil Shatara, owned J & L Liquors at Noe Street and Henry Street (now a LabCorp medical testing center), and Jake’s first jobs were working there and at Church Street Groceteria, still operating at 15th Street and Church Street. Jake’s longtime employee and the second anchor of Jake’s market, Leslie (Les) Justice, worked at J & L too. Les moved to the Duboce Triangle in 1971 when he was eleven years old, and has lived here ever since. He first lived on the East side of Noe Street in the middle of the block, and now lives above the store.

Both Jake and Les remember the neighborhood being much more ethnically mixed when they moved here than it is now. Les, who is Filipino and Welsh, said his friend group growing up represented the neighborhood, including black, Latino, Asian and ethnic white (Irish and Scandinavian and Arab) kids.

Jake’s original name is Yacoub Shatara. There were a lot of Yacoub Shataras in his family, because all of his many uncles named their oldest son after their grandfather. When Jake was taking a Heald College class with his cousin with the same name, the professor decided to call Jake Jake and the cousin Jacob, and it stuck. Jake also attended James Lick Middle School and Mission High. Les attended Dudley Stone Elementary school in the Haight neighborhood (which later became De Avila School), Everett Middle School, and McAteer High School.

Jake started steadily working at the Noe Valley Market when he was 21. In the past 43 years, he has taken only two 1-week vacations; one for his honeymoon (Hawaii) and one cruise (Jamaica and the Caribbean). Les has worked at J & L and Rosenberg’s, as well as Noe Valley Market, but he has been at Jake’s for over 30 years. He has been living upstairs from the market since Jake moved down the Peninsula in 1987. Jake married his wife Ghada in 1984, and they have 3 kids – Jalil (after his dad, family tradition), Leila, and Ramy. They all live in the Bay Area, although the oldest is out in Concord now.

Both Jake and Les feel a kind of familial affection for people from the neighborhood, especially the kids they have seen grow up here. Both have seen the neighborhood change a lot, both for good and ill, and they see more change coming in the future. Les is worried that it may become a place only, as he put it, for the “rich and richer”. He has seen some of his long-term customers, people he has known for a long time, move to the far reaches of the East Bay or even farther. Jake has a more positive spin; he sees lots of babies in the neighborhood and hopes they’ll grow up here and hopes maybe the Duboce Triangle can again become a family neighborhood like it was when he arrived.

Most of us first came to know and love Jake’s for the fact that it has everything from fresh fruits and vegetables, to staples, sundries, and indulgences (ginger beer!) as well. But in the end, it is the feel- ing of family that sticks with you, and the adoptive family of Jake and Les is the Triangle as a whole. We love you guys.
