Dear Neighbors

I'm sharing this article to help bring light to a city wide concern shared by  our neighbors in The Mission. Neighbors and community leaders gathered together following assaults in their neighborhood. There neighbors are calling for A State of Emergency, to address the growing crisis on our streets.

I represent Duboce Triangle Neighborhood helping bring attention to the crisis on our streets through both Castro Leadership Council and Save the Castro, both teams working to create an environment of safety for all. We recognize we are in a crisis situation; people dying daily on our streets and services not reaching the most vulnerable.

Creating a safe, happy, prosporous communities starts with each of us lending a hand, giving a voice and sharing our time.  Let  you neighbors know  you're there and you care.

Good Day Friends and Neighbors,

I want to thank those of you that attended the February 14 DTNA General Meeting. We were joined by Josh Switzky from Planning Dpt. to discuss the newest SF Housing Element and how the focus on the new housing density program will focus on equity and inclusion. Supv Mandelman was also invited to share his vision for 2023 and the challenges of a smaller tax base may impact all of us.

It is with a heavy heart that I ask you support our neighbor and friend Andra and her tenant who lost everything this week in a home fire at her home on Carmelita in Duboce Triangle Neighborhood. Andra has been a friend and neighbor living in Duboce Triangle since 1977.

DTNA will be working on this issue over the next few years to assure our neighborhood is a responsible steward of development and community .

Hi Neighbors, 

I want to share some Land Use news for your educational benefit. Yesterday, the San Francisco board of supervisors unanimously (and without comment) voted to approve the Housing Element plan. 

Some of you may remember that we had Shelley Caltagirone from the SF Planning Department present the Housing Element at the August 2021 Land Use meeting. At that time, the plan was in its conception, more of a collection of goals than an actual plan. The plan has grown a lot since then, see the link below to the2873-page document. There is a lot of stuff in here, new requirements from the State have required this Housing Element to be more specific and aggressive than any previous plan. 

There has been a lot of dysfunction on the City's part in producing this plan. They dragged their feet, found out late last year that the deadline was 90 days sooner than they expected, rushed, and did not have the full outreach to neighborhood groups like ours that we were expecting. 

I've heard from two neighbors who have been following the developments and are concerned about the zoning impact on the Triangle. If you go to page 595 you can read about the Rezoning Program. The maps on pages 601, 603, and 604 show some pretty substantial upzoning in our neighborhood. These heat maps are very unspecific/diagrammatical in nature but indicate what could be coming. 

Some hopeful news is that once approved by the State, the SF Planning Department has a three-year period to evaluate specific areas/neighborhoods in the city and how they can appropriately adopt the goals of the housing element. It should be a top priority for DTNA to engage with Planning soon and create opportunities for neighbors to learn about the plan and weigh in on how they think it should be implemented in their community. 

The not-so-hopeful news is that this review period is kind of uncharted waters. Speaking with Supervisor Mandleman about this, it's unclear the extent of outreach the Planning Department is required to do, how much feedback they need to incorporate, and how much (or little) they are allowed to deviate from the State-approved plan. Nevertheless, DTNA should be at the forefront and make sure voices from our neighborhood are heard. 

There is a second vote next Tuesday, which is also the deadline for SF's Housing Element to be approved by the state. "Missing the deadline would risk San Francisco losing control over housing approvals within its borders and would also jeopardize funding for transportation projects and affordable housing."

I imagine this will be an active talking point for the Land Use committee and DTNA Board for the next few years.

Hello Creepy Neighbors, Scary Kids, Vicious Dogs and Fiendishly friends!

Get that crazy constim in and come join the Neighborhood Halloween Block Party at the Noe Street Commons at Noe & Market.  

Costume contests for you, the kids and the dogs.  Lots of fun, candy, dancing and entertainment. 

I want to take this opportunity to reach out and thank you for all that you do to make Duboce Triangle a great place to live. 

You volunteer countless hours, use precious weekend time, and stay up late to work on projects, paint signs, and cook meals, all in an effort that builds and supports our community. 

Just some of the work you do! Leading side

walk garden initiatives on Natoma, Pierce, Carmelita, and Waller, replacing and caring for trees on 14th and 15th Streets, fundraising for Ukraine and McKinley Elementary School, adopting our traffic islands and street gardens on Noe and Sanchez Streets, caring for Duboce Park, participating in environmental clean-ups, and, yes, helping to run a neighborhood association that is supportive of all these efforts... the list goes on. The time and energy you put into making Duboce Triangle the warm, caring, and engaged neighbor- hood that it is, does not go unnoticed and is truly appreciated by all of us who live, work, and play here.

As I’ve walked throughout the neighborhood and talked with many of you, I have seen it in your eyes and in your smiles – the pride you have in the work you do, the causes you support, and the community you build. Community is not just Duboce Triangle, it’s your friendships and the relationships you have with your neighbors, the local merchants, or the people you see walking through the neighborhood every day. 

Just last month, 25 neighbors joined our movement and completed an Earth Day clean sweep of the southern side of Duboce Triangle, while on the northern side, neighbors joined together and planted beautiful street gardens, all with the same goal: Keep Duboce Triangle green, clean, and environmentally safe. 

Mark your calendars, because in just a few weeks, on Saturday, June 18th our Environmental Protection Impact Committee (EPIC) will host a neighborhood-wide Pride pick-up. We will meet at the corner of Noe St. and Duboce Ave. at 9:30 a.m., and pick up trash from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. 

When we work together we are stronger, kinder, and more understanding of one another. DTNA needs you, your energy, your understanding, and your efforts. We want to keep building your community; a community committed to one another. More at dtna.org.

Hello Friends and Neighbors:

My name is Frank Tizedes and I am the new President of Duboce Triangle Neighborhood Association. I humbly take on the responsibility of the President and pledge to act as a conduit to community building; with your help and energy we can accomplish whatever we set out to do.

Six months ago, I conducted a quick survey on Facebook asking neighbors what they would like DTNA to focus on. I heard you loud and clear: promote community building, safety & crime awareness, and  improved recreation and environment. So for 2022, I will be focused around three simple yet impactful areas for growth that will help enhance and expand our goal to meet your needs and interests:

1: Environmental Protection Impact Committee (EPIC): Creating a platform to bring all of us together as stewards of our environment, protecting and expanding the awesome green spaces that fill Duboce Triangle.

2: Membership: With your help and the help of our neighbors and local businesses, we can do anything. I will be working closely with our Membership Chair to expand outreach and access to more neighbors. I plan to create and promote social interactions that foster and build a stronger community across Duboce Triangle.

3: Putting the safety of each and every one of you who lives, works, or does business in Duboce Triangle as a priority. I will work closely with our Supervisor’s office, SFPD Park Station Captain Pedrini, and all organizations and agencies that will help promote, protect and foster a safe Duboce Triangle for everyone. A safe environment is a healthy environment.

We have some really great things planned, and we want to hear your ideas to plan more, do more, and have more fun! Let's have more street/park social activities!  Start your streets' First Friday Block Happy Hours! Join EPIC and help us plan and plant 300+ trees throughout the neighborhood, street/park clean-ups and garden plantings. Help us manage a safe Duboce Triangle and join a network of connected neighbors seeking to keep our streets, playgrounds, and businesses active and safe. Get involved with Friends of Duboce Park and let's work together to help maintain the gem of our neighborhood.
